about

As the Underground scene, and the country at large for that matter, faces its harshest Winter yet (the second place being last Winter) – a redheaded protagonist emerges from the foggy Leicestershire countryside to once again re-ignite the dancefloor and the fire in our hearts. It is just as well, because EDF is about to cut me off! Back after a short hiatus that felt like an eternity in a Skiddle general release queue, Jake Twell has dusted off his slipmat to raise hell with another sensational set of remixes that breathe life and a new beginning into floor fillers long forgotten (probably).

First up, we have The Loft – City Of Dreams (JT Overnight Edit). Arguably the most interesting of the bunch to listeners looking to define a track within the narrow parameters of their own comfort. This track keeps the UK Funky style beat from the Wine It Remix, but pulls in raspy lyrics tickle the pores on your ears and a rhythmic bell that occasionally permeates the rhythm. Soft, mellow synths help build an eclectic track that occasionally breaks out into choral strings, earning its transcendent namesake.

Second in line is a remix of Isaac Rudder, a track called Wine It. Now I know what you are thinking, and you would be correct too. From the second you hit play, Twell brings the urban spice of South London dancing into your eardrums. With patois laced lyrics undercut by a timeless UK Funky beat, the track carried me back to 2009 Saturday nights at Liquid & Envy. Free Pepsi and Oyster Card travel. Simpler times. A guaranteed winner to make it into your Summer BBQ playlist in 2023.

Another track that takes its roots in the turn of the century is First Choice – Aint He Bad, reimagined for you here by Jake Twell for audiences with richer taste and poorer living standards. Once again, the powerful female vocals remain but the track is here morphed away from its acidic past and instead takes on an altogether groovier identity. Twell layers soft, floating synths over a tantalizing drum beat, setting a lounge worthy scene that only the most hip of Lo-Fi House tracks played in your nearest craft ale bar could manage.

Last and by no means least, comes Jake’s personal touch on a Tribal classic in The Underground – Celeda. The iconic bongo and ethereal pentameter of the vocals remain a firm fixture, but Twell has surgically removed the rest of the fittings in favour of his own equally satisfying interior. The track begins with sharp, echoing kick and a jarring snare that reminded me of the Dun Dun by Boddika and Joy Orbison, a distinctly industrial vibe replaces the tribalism of the original, but a humming synth lingers just beyond the vocals and builds as the lyrics progress. The track then breaks out and the shakers, bongo and drums become entwined, giving birth to a sense that encapsulates both an industrial and funky rhythm. Think of a warehouse…but where they stock Pineapples, you are basically there.
