about

The time is upon us! The UKs Bipolar relationship with the weather seems to be almost at an end and as the first noticeable rays of sunshine reach our calamitous isle, it is time to set our sights on the UK festival scene. Or, all we have got left, as I believe many would say at this point. And what more to get us in the mood, than another selection of tracks hot off the press from none other than the man Jake Twell himself. The people of Leicester might be looking at Championship football next year, but Twell is here to raise spirits higher than the retail price of a bottle of extra virgin olive oil. Let’s have it!

J Hustl3 & Magnus Chapple - Dance Dance (JT Overnight Edit)

One thing Jake Twell always deserves praise for is his versatility and ambition in exploring different styles of sound. This track is a perfect testament to this talent. A bumping house track this is not. What it is, is an unapologetically groovy number that instantly pulls back memories of early 2000s Mr.Scruff and The All Seeing Eye. The cheeky bongo beat, jazzy trumpets and piano riffs, this one has it all. Most revelers leave a club in search of a kebab and their ex’s phone number. Not me, this one is putting me in the right mind to plan a casino heist with my 10 coolest friends.

Kal-I Tek Plantain (JT Overnight Edit)

A track that is coming straight from the streets of Kingston, and with a name like Tek Plantain, I can certainly see why. This one will have you in the mood for Carnival. A phat bass that slaps your eardrum with a slight jiggle to it, and catchy dancehall lyrics makes for the ideal summer party anthem to go alongside your cup of Wray.

Oumou Sangaré - Kamelemba (JT Overnight Edit)

And just like that, we have gone full circle in a whistle stop tour of all of the sound system cultural exports the UK need be proud of as we end on Garage. Believe me, my little Londoner heart skips a beat as soon as I hear the sound of a 2 step beat come in. However this song offers so much more; layering in hauntingly beautiful vocals that pay homage to the African musicians taking an exciting central role in modern dance tracks. This track is profoundly fresh and manages to expertly blend the exciting vibe of the new wave garage scene, with some of the cross continental collaborations we are seeing from the likes of TSHA and more.

Erick Morillo - Let Me Tell You About House (JT Overnight Edit)

No points for guessing the genre. The first track in the latest Overnight Edits sets the bar high, opening with an infectious tribal drum beat that is shortly joined by a cyclical gospelesque vocal sample that wouldn't sound out of place on a Defected night. By the close of the first minute the track will have you by the belt loops on your best dancing trousers. A low atmospheric synth draws in and out below the catchy vocals and high hats, for a track that seems to surround and immerse you. Best enjoyed live, being off your face is an option.
